Autumn in the Mountains

We are enjoying the beautiful changing of the leaves here in the Southeastern Kentucky mountains. If you have never seen the mountains this time of year, you really should make the trip. The hills really show off in the Autumn, and one of the very best ways to see this area is out on the trails. Riding a four wheeler or Side by Side has quickly become one the leading activities around this area....and for great reasons! The best reason being more fun with your friends and family! With the newer styles, whole families can go out on trails now. There is an ATV for all size riders and the quickly popular "side by sides" let you bring everyone along, as well as a cooler for lunch later!

If you ride a UTV (also called a side by side), you can take a passenger with you or even the kids too! There are many options to choose from with all three of our brands of side by sides. Just released in October, Kawasaki just came out with their own four seater, the 2012 Teryx4. It is the hottest thing to hit the UTV market from Kawasaki this year! The all new Teryx4 vehicles are due to arrive any day in the store and we are taking reservations for them now!

The very popular Polaris line offers UTVs that offer space for four riders as well, but Polaris really knows how to bring the speed into the market. A local favorite is the Polaris RZR line up. Wow, Summer flew by!

Wow, the summer of 2011 really flew by...but it must have been because we were so very busy here at the store (and out of the store too!)! However, busy is a good thing when it comes to business.
A little recap, we started the summer off with a Polaris Summer Sales Event here at the store at the end of June. Then came July, and we were off to the Polaris trade show in Nashville and it did not disappoint. The new 2012 models unveiled at the show were amazing and the custom jobs on some of the RZRs were inspiring! (Got lots of great ideas if you are interested!!) They also had two great musical acts perform....The Zac Brown Band and Justin Moore, and they were incredible! All three of our brands (Yamaha, Polaris, and Kawasaki) released their new 2012 lineups and we are thrilled with some of the new upgrades to the vehicles. Faster, stronger, better seems to be the theme with all of them this year!
However, I think the most fun we had all summer was at the annual Crockettsville event here in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky in August. It was the fourth annual Crockettsville Charity Concert and Trail Ride this year, and it was a huge success! YPK Motorsports is a very proud sponsor of this event every year and we are continually pleased with its success. The entire weekend raises money to support the Buckhorn Children's Home in Buckhorn, KY. We had a blast at the huge YPK tent talking to all of the folks about the Polaris vehicles that we brought with us to show off. The trail ride on Sunday was fantastic. With all of that craziness, it is no wonder summer flew by. We were blessed to have had a fantastic summer business wise, and we are excited about the Fall riding season that is creeping up on us in the next couple of weeks. It is time to change the oil, buy cool weather gear, and get ready for the trails. Camping and hunting season is here and we have some awesome Camo vehicles in stock that will get the job done and do it with style. Camo is HOT this year!! Now, New for 2012, Polaris even lets the kids get in on the camo action....and it is too cute! Polaris has the only kid sized UTV on the market with the RZR 170....and this year, Camo is king of all of the trails, big and small! We have one of these little things in the showroom and it is getting lots of attention!
Maybe you are a Yamaha Grizzly fan instead...we like this 2012 Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI Auto 4x4 in Camo. Or perhaps you prefer Kawasaki and need some room for the whole gang AND that big buck you are going to bag. Maybe the 2012 Kawasaki Mule 4010 is more your style...and yes, it comes in CAMO! Summer Riding in the HEAT!!

Hallelujah! Summer has finally arrived in Kentucky!!

At YPK Motorsports, we are so happy to have the warm sunshine and great weather return. We love to get out and ride and we know you do too. There are a few things to remember when you ride in the heat and sunshine. Unfortunately, you can easily dehydrate or overheat if you are riding for long periods of time in hot weather. We want to offer you a few tips to prevent anything like a heat stroke or illness that could occur with the rising temperatures.

Tip #1: Some street bike riders may already know a great secret to keep cool during summer riding, but some may not. It may seem that it would be more comfortable to ride without your jacket when it is hot out, but it actually isn't....if you know the special trick. If you soak down your shirt with water before you button up your coat, the wind will actually act as an air conditioner and cool you off rapidly while in motion! This method actually offers a cooler ride than if you weren't wearing a coat at all! If you soak your shirt, your body is able to more easily disperse its heat. Be sure to have your coat loosened as much as possible (using buttons instead of zippers, if possible) so that air circulates creating a cooling system on your body as you roll on down the highway! A mesh protective jacket also aids in the cooling effect. We at YPK personally like the Icon Men's Arc Mesh jacket for its protective factors as well as its breath-ability. Stopping to re-wet your shirt every 30 minutes or so in extreme heat will keep you cool and safe.

Tip #2: Wear light colors. This includes your brain bucket! A light colored, full face helmet with a closed visor is actually cooler than an open one while on the move. Be sure to pick one with a full face sun visor and lots of ventilation areas. We like the AFX FX-100 Sun Shield Helmet. It comes in white and has lots of venting for a cooler head! Wetting your skull cap before putting on your helmet helps too!

Tip #3: Prevent Sunburn! Remember that you can still burn through lightweight fabrics. Be sure to wear a high SPF sunscreen and reapply throughout the day. Also, always pay attention to the areas often forgotten: between sleeves and gloves, back of the neck, throat areas, and if you have your jacket open...the v-neck area.

Tip # 4: WATER!! Drink it, as well as wear it! Be sure you are drinking water throughout your day of riding to prevent dehydration! We suggest a bag type water dispenser, such as the Thor Hydrant Hydration Pack. This will let you drink while on the move! If you decide to carry water bottles, be sure to stop about every half hour to rehydrate.

-To start off, this Thursday, March 17th, YPK Motorsports is having a Yamaha Hot Winter Nights Event. Attend this event to get an up-close look at the exciting Star Motorcycles and Yamaha motorcycles. We will be staying open until 7pm and serving refreshments! Be sure to stop by. Great prices on too many vehicles. You do not want to miss it.

-It is NCAA Basketball Tournament time here in KY....YPK Motorsports has decided to host a NCAA Bracket Challenge. Time to Winterize Your Offroad Vehicle

Wow, how quickly time is flying by! The leaves are gone and it is November already! The weather is turning cold, fast! With those cooler temps, comes time for some preparation for winter for your offroad vehicles if you are planning on storing them until Spring.

YPK has come up with an easy list of 7 steps
for you to easily winterize your ATV or offroad vehicle.

Step 1: Fill gas tank. Be sure to include a fuel stabilizer to prevent the gasoline from breaking down and causing damage to the fuel lines and various other areas of your ATV.

Step 2: Change the oil. This helps prevent corrosion on the metal surfaces of your ATV. This helps keep everything clean and properly lubed.

Step 3: Lube your throttle and clutch cables to help them stay in good working condition.

Step 4: Battery: Ideally you want to leave your battery in the vehicle with a "trickle charger" or battery tender attached when you plan to store for the winter, since it gradually loses charge over time. A trickle charger (or battery tender) is a smart charger that basically turns itself on and off as needed to prevent overcharging. Be sure to take time to clean the posts on your battery before connecting to the charger. Add a bit of grease to the threads of the bolts to keep them clean all season.

Step 5: Tires: Inflate to their ideal level to decrease the chance of getting flat spots on your tires. Move the ATV several times a month and parking on a different section of the tires every time helps prevent flat spots. To prevent dry rot on your tires, be sure to keep them out of direct sunlight over the storage time.

Step 6: Give your ATV a bath. Be sure to remove any grease or bugs on the paint or chromed areas. There are products available to protect the finish of the paint and chrome of your vehicle at the store.

Step 7: Store your vehicle inside a garage if at all possible. If storage outside is necessary, be sure to invest in a good fitting, breathable cover and check on the vehicle periodically to be sure the cover is protecting your investment.

Last week on the YPK blogspot, we informed you that all three of YPK Motorsports' brands: Yamaha, Polaris, and Kawasaki had all delivered their new 2011 vehicles to the store. This is always an exciting time of year for us....kind of like Christmas in July, if you will. We love seeing the new specs, improvements, and colors that all the brands bring!

We discussed the crazy list of new improvements for the 2011 Polaris RZR in our last blog. This week we will be discussing the specs and improvements for the 2011 Kawasaki KX250F motorcycle. Now, it used to be said that the factory guys get all the good stuff. Their bikes are faster, lighter and just plain more tricked out than the bikes you can get off the showroom floor. There may be some truth there, but that’s changing....Fast! The gap between production and factory-prepped motocrossers has never been narrower. And with the introduction of Kawasaki’s massively reworked 2011 KX™ 250F, that gap just shrank a little more.

For 2011, there are nearly 30 upgrades to the Kawasaki KX250F !! These many upgrades reflect the rigorous testing and development happening at Kawasaki. Their engineers started with what’s become the gold standard in 250 class racing, the 2010 KX250F, (winner of the 2010 AMA East and West Supercross Lites titles), and improved this great bike....even more!

Loads of engine modifications have made the latest KX250F an absolute corner-to-corner screamer. Refinements to the 249cc single include higher compression, a modified top on the exclusive Bridged-Box Bottom piston, higher valve lift, longer spark plug design, and a new coil that offers a hotter and longer-lasting spark. And, the addition of Digital Fuel Injection (DFI®) produces stunning – and more useable – power. The system automatically adjusts to suit track and climate conditions, even when the going gets rough.

An optional ECU Setting Tool allows racers to select from several different ECU data maps or fine tune a custom map. The tool can also record up to six hours of data, including engine rpm, degree of throttle opening, coolant and air temperatures, ignition timing, fuel adjustments, gear position and system voltage.

Headlining the chassis changes on the KX250F is Kawasaki’s new Separate Function Fork. Instead of a conventional fork design, the SFF separates spring and damping duties (one in each leg) for improved performance, less friction, lower weight and easier adjustability. The right leg has the spring, with a larger main spring/rod assembly than traditional forks; the left leg handles damping, with rebound and compression damping adjustable on the fork tube.

As for ergonomics, the KX250F’s bodywork offers riders a slim interface and a natural positioning that make going fast a simple affair. The upgraded seat provides excellent seated grip and rider mobility, and features firm urethane foam to hold its shape longer.

The 2011 models are arriving daily from ALL THREE brands that YPK Motorsports carries! There have been some great improvements to many of the vehicles for the new year's line up.

Today, we will focus on the 2011 Polaris RZR UTV or side by side. Polaris was the first manufacturer or brand to offer "Side-by-Sides" that offered impressive razor sharp performance and lightning speed. Bringing fun into the side by side world like never before. Polaris continues to bring innovative ideas to the table and lead the side by side category.

Let's take a look at a few of the new specs.....For 2011, The RANGER RZR group has a more aggressive style for the front-end that will increase the cooling airflow area by 29 percent. There is new side protection for easier ingress and egress. And there is a new more accessible glove box that is in-cab now. High/Low headlights are new for increased night visibility for the late night riders. Big news of a new fuel management system coupled with a new tank offers a 30 percent improvement in the range with better slow speed drive-ability. More quality improvements include a better clutch/belt cooling, front and rear drive durability improvements, and sealed dash switches to keep out the mud. The new RZR units will also feature new easier-to-use side nets.

The RANGER RZR 800 will offer six percent more power in 2011. With the addition of an 800 H.O. engine giving the RANGER RZR 800 55hp and quicker acceleration corner-to-corner for more razor sharp trail performance. Built for trails, the RANGER RZR 800 improvements will include new trail friendly extenders for the rear rack to make it more convenient to carry more gear. Polaris also will offer the vehicle in the new Polaris Pursuit Camouflage pattern for the hunters that want to hunt in style.

YPK contest!! Runs till July 31st, 2010!!

YPK Motorsports is having its first ever Facebook/website contest!!
Here’s the scoop……………..
YPK wants to see some pictures of you and your friends getting muddy on your ATV’s and UTV’s. The photo of the “muddiest” will win a prize that can be picked up at the YPK store in Jackson. We are running the contest until the end of July.
The details are that it has to be a new photo (within the last six months) of YOU on your ATV or UTV. You can post the picture to our Facebook page or you can send it to our email address Photos@YPKmotorsports.com YPK will have the right to use the photo on its website and will make a decision on the winner. All decisions are final.
We are looking forward to seeing how muddy you can get!!

Safety for ATVs and other recreational vehicles

So it has occurred to me that while we sell lots of different types of motorsport type vehicles, such as four-wheelers, Utility vehicles like the Polaris RZR and Yamaha Rhino, and of course motorcycles like the Kawasaki Ninja; We don't talk a whole lot about the safety issues involved with this type of recreation. There are many things to consider about safety when using a vehicle of any of these types.
You must consider clothing choices and head/eye protection for your personal safety. Wearing over-the-ankle boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts, as well as gloves and goggles, you will protect you from cuts and scrapes and other injuries from low limbs and rocks and other debris.
You must also consider that like other activities involving high speeds and heavy machinery, there are certain risks assumed by the rider of such vehicles. To be as safe as possible, follow common sense safety tips.
1. Get trained 2. WEAR a Helmet 3. No children on ADULT ATVs
4. Don't ride with a passenger 5. Don't ride on pavement
6. Don't ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Spring Ground Pounding Time!

YPK Motorsports wants to invite you to come to the Knott County Trail Rider's "Spring Ground Pounding" this weekend in Knott County, Kentucky.

This is a three day event running from Friday April 16th through Sunday the 18th at the Knott County ATV Training Center.

There will be rides to choose from (such as short, long, and night trail rides), events to enter such as the Mud Bog and Sled Pull, as well as classes for sizes 300 up to 700 and up, and of course Side by Sides.

There will also be space for your camping needs, food booths, music, prizes, and more.

Be sure to drop by the YPK Booth and say hello to J.L. while you are there.
